League advocates meet for proactive dialogue and strategic networking

Your League works diligently to maintain awareness of the good things credit unions do in the larger community and the importance of credit union issues in the minds of lawmakers, regulators, and the general public. Advocacy is a core League initiative designed to be the unified voice for credit unions in local, state, and national politics.

HCUL Legislative and Governmental Affairs Director Paula Sumimoto-Matsushima recently participated in the Western States Governmental Affairs Professionals and Specialist (GAPS) Meeting. This gathering of league advocacy professionals is a place for productive dialogue on what’s working, what can be improved, and how leagues can collectively elevate credit union advocacy to new levels.

“This is a great network of governmental affairs professionals who are active in federal and state legislation and strongly advocate for the credit union industry. I have learned so much from this network,” Sumimoto-Matsushima said. “They are always willing to share strategy and information. Nothing beats networking directly with your peers to learn the issues and foster deeper relationships.”

American Association of Credit Union Leagues Executive Director Brad Miller noted, “Every time I get the opportunity to attend these regional GAPS meetings, I come away with a heightened understanding and sincere appreciation for the amazing work leagues are doing day-in and day-out.”
