Share your stories and secure your future

In a state where “talking story” is a way of life, it’s surprising how many “good news” stories about Hawaii credit unions go untold. Most of us know at least one storyteller in our family or circle of friends.  This is someone you love spending time with as he or she weaves tales that allow you to dream, reflect, laugh, or wonder.

In a July 15, 2021, CUInsight article, Tansley Stearns of Canvas Credit Union posed this question to industry leaders:

“What if our credit unions were all that good at storytelling? What if, collectively, we regularly activated the emotions that the best storytellers activate?”

Steans challenges each credit union in the country to, “share at least one story per month with those making decisions impacting credit unions.” She suggests stories that demonstrate the impact your credit union has on:

  • individual members and their financial lives;
  • a local business and helping them better serve your community;
  • your community, through focused charitable giving;
  • young people as you provide financial education in new and interesting ways; or
  • the humans you serve as unexpected events occurred that dramatically changed their lives and how your credit union stayed constant in service by maintaining branch access, growing community outreach, and providing even stronger digital access.

advancing hawaii emailFor the past year, your League has been encouraging credit unions to share good news stories on the Advancing Communities site. CUNA launched this site to showcase credit unions and the great member stories they have to tell! Each state has its own landing page where credit union members, staff, and/or volunteers can post an impactful member story.

While we have some member stories already, our goal is to get more short video stories on Hawaii’s Credit Unions page so we can show our legislators how credit unions serve their members. It can be a story told by a staff member at the credit union (no need to identify the member if you don’t have their permission) or it can be told by the member themselves if they are willing and available. Sharing your short video story is easy - just click on this link. Any video can be done simply with your phone or a member’s phone!

If you have any questions about your credit union can participate in Advancing Communities, please contact Laurie Moore at the League.
