On February 18, League President Dennis Tanimoto and Communications Officer Laurie Moore attended Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network (KCMN) Partner Celebration. The event, held at the Honolulu Country Club, honored corporate sponsors that support KCMN with fundraising.

Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids, with Miracle Match dollars from CO-OP Financial, raised over $144,000 in 2019 – a 48 percent increase over 2018.  Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids also joined the ranks of the $1 Million Club for cumulative donations raised since 1998. A beautiful painting by 2020 Champion Haumea Friel was presented to League Communications Officer Laurie Moore who accepted it on behalf of Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids.

The 2020 Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network Champion was introduced at the Celebration. Haumea Friel was born with a condition that leads to one leg being shorter than the other. Since her birth at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, a medical team has been caring for Haumea and what she calls her “super leg.” The 5-year-old has undergone more than 10 surgeries at Kapiolani. Recently, she underwent a 16-hour procedure called rotationplasty. This complex surgery rotates the lower leg, enabling the foot to function like a knee that can be fitted for a prosthesis.
