Hawaii First FCU Vice President of Operations & Development Mary Ann Otake is the newest Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) from Hawaii.

She joins an elite group of CUDEs in the state that includes Jennifer Sims (Hawaii State FCU) and Monica Belz (Kauai Government EFCU) and Mel Chiba (Kauai Community FCU retired).

Forty-eight credit union leaders were designated as CUDEs after completing the National Credit Union Foundation’s (the Foundation) Credit Union Development Education (DE) Training.

The recent DE Training was held September 11-16, 2019 at the Lowell Center in Madison, Wis. and was attended by employees and volunteers from credit unions and system partners across the United States and the globe.

Mary Ann Otake with her team worked until midnight to complete their case study, which they successfully presented later that day.

DE Training is a unique experiential training program that provides lessons in credit union structure, purpose and the “why” that differentiates credit unions from other financial institutions. During the Foundation’s signature program, participants are involved in group exercises, field visits, and interactive speaker sessions that provide insights into how credit unions can leverage their unique business model to help their members and communities overcome the financial and developmental issues they face.

“Almost a year ago, Mary Ann applied to the DE training,” noted Hawaii First FCU President/CEO Laura Aguirre. “She fought hard and won a scholarship to make attending this training possible. This was a long-time dream for her and Hawaii First that finally came true.”maryann cudeplacque

Since 1982, nearly 2,000 credit union advocates from over 35 countries have attended the U.S. DE Training to earn their CUDE™ designation. Independent, international DE programs have spun off from the U.S. program and are operational in Africa, Asia, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and Philippines. These programs have expanded the global DE alumni network to more than 4,500 individuals worldwide.
