Our convention theme is "Navigating a Changing Landscape". The financial services industry continues to change at breakneck speed. Credit unions strive to keep pace with rapidly evolving technological advances while maintaining the personal touch. On Thursday, April 25, we invite you to register for concurrent educational sessions to satisfy the training needs of volunteers and staff starting at 1:00 - 4:30 pm. Join us at the Welcome Reception at 5:00-7:00 pm to kick-off the convention. Credit union volunteers and staff do not need to purchase a registration package to attend the Thursday educational sessions. However, registration is required to electronically distribute presentation handouts prior to the convention and determine appropriate meeting room set up.

Cancellation and Refund - All requests for cancellations, refunds, and substitutions must be made in writing and emailed to info@hcul.org. Verbal requests will not be processed. Refunds will be processed after the convention, less a $25.00 processing fee, for requests received in writing no later than March 8, 2024. Cancellations are non-refundable after March 8; however, substitutions are welcome at any time. Hawaii Credit Union League also reserves the right to change the site, speakers, or schedule of this program due to unforeseen circumstances, with as much advance notice possible.

SPEAKERS
Sarah Bang serves as senior advisor to Vice Chairman Kyle S. Hauptman. Sarah is a credit union system veteran with nearly 40 years of experience at all levels of the industry. Prior to retiring in 2017, she was the Executive Vice President of Industry Relations at CO-OP Financial Services. Prior to joining CO-OP, she was the President/CEO of Financial Service Centers Cooperative Inc., (FSCC) a credit union shared branching and payments network with branches in all fifty states and five countries. FSCC was in six states with less than 100 branches when she became CEO. During her tenure, FSCC grew to over 3,300 branches and 2,200 full service financial kiosks giving 50 million members real-time access to their credit union accounts.

Dan DeMers is the Chief Simplification Officer & Co-Founder of Cinchy. A leading provider of enterprise data collaboration. Prior to founding Cinchy, Dan spent over a decade as an IT executive working in Financial Services responsible for delivering mission-critical projects and technology investments. Mike de Vere, CEO at Zest AI, has 20 years of experience transforming organizations large and small, public and private, and loves nothing better than figuring out how to use technology to solve strategic business issues. Zest’s Model Management System lets lenders break the limitations of traditional credit scores to identify good borrowers overlooked by legacy techniques. Prior to Zest, Mike was managing director of Nielsen’s global insights business, converting it to a SaaS-based model. Before that, he was president and CEO of Harris Interactive and spent more than a decade in leadership roles at JD Power.

Mark Komatsu is the Chief Compliance Officer at Hawaii Law Enforcement FCU. He is an experienced professional with detailed technical functional knowledge in compliance, compliance management systems, risk, learning management systems, lending, deposit/ operations/ACH, systems administration, technical writing (policies, procedures, meeting minutes), audit, accounting, management, customer service, training, project management, and bank secrecy act gained through educational/training opportunities, conducting training, and auditing/reviewing of key areas within financial services institutions.

Stanley Lau is the founder of Hawaii Tech Support servicing businesses and organizations in the private and public sectors providing local IT Support such as technical helpdesk support, computer support, cyber security, and consulting. With nearly 20 years of experience in IT and consulting, Stan first helps businesses understand their technology needs then implements the best solution.

Anne Legg is a recognized, award-winning industry expert, author, educator, and member-centric data strategist who holds an MBA thesis on the credit union business model. She is the author of Big Data/Big Climb: A credit union playbook for leveraging data and talent to achieve revolutionary member relationships. She is the founder and CEO of THRIVE Strategic Services. She has guided over 600 credit union leaders on a mission to simplify their data transformation, identify new revenue sources, lessen member friction, and increase talent productivity to truly change member lives.

Sterling Nielsen is President/CEO at Mountain America Credit Union since 2008. He led the credit union through the recession and achieved significant growth in the years following. The strategies set forth by Nielsen allowed the credit union to grow at an average of 17.39% from 2016 to 2018. Since 2016, Mountain America has grown nearly $3 billion in assets and over 200,000 in net new members. Mountain America Credit Union is the second largest credit union in Utah. It is also the 10th largest credit union nationally by total assets. In 2019, Sterling was named Credit Union Executives Society’s Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year.

Michael Petrone is a Risk Management Consultant in Risk and Compliance Solutions with TruStageTM. In this role he is responsible for assisting credit unions in identifying areas of risk in their operations and recommending appropriate control to reduce loss exposures. Mike specializes in the area of of workplace operations, physical security, internal controls, and employee safety. Mike began his career with TruStage in 1986 as a loss prevention specialist.

Frank Santucci has more than 37 years’ experience working with credit unions nationwide on balance sheet management issues and regulatory challenges. As the principal author of the ALM model used by Stifel Financial and its Balance Sheet Management Services division, he has in-depth knowledge and insight on effective balance sheet and risk management strategies. Frank is a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences on various ALM and risk management techniques, as well as current industry trends.

Jennifer Sims is Vice President of Learning and Development at Hawaii State FCU. She has been in the financial services industry for over 30 years. Her experience covers both frontline branch, back office operations, and training & development. Her responsibilities include overseeing the planning, development and implementation of training and education, career development, and financial wellness initiatives throughout the credit union. Jennifer is a certified credit union development educator (CUDE) from the National Credit Union Foundation and a certified credit union financial counselor (CCUFC) from CUNA.
